European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)

Once you have purchased your travel insurance policy it is essential that you also apply for a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) before travelling abroad.

The European Health Insurance card replaces the E111 form which ceased to be valid from 31 st December 2005. Commencing 1 st January 2006, the EHIC is now the necessary document for your entitlement to free or reduced emergency medical treatment within the European Economic Area.

It is paramount to stress that travelling with an EHIC form will not constitute a sufficient level of cover in event of an emergency, but rather merely allow you to emergency medical cover. An EHIC will not cover any follow up medical treatment or repatriation, nor will it provide cover against non-emergency medical treatment, personal liability, lost or stolen possessions or the cancellation or curtailment of your trip. Do not assume that the health care standards in the country you are visiting will meet the same high standards you are used to in the UK.

All UK nationals are entitled to travel with an EHIC. Travelling with an EHIC will provide cover for yourself, your spouse and any dependent children up to the age of 16 years (19yrs if still in full time education). EHIC’s can be applied for online, by phone or by post. You can apply for an EHIC for your spouse/partner and any children up to the age of 16 (or 19 if they are in full time education) at the same time as your own. Whichever method you choose to make the application, before you apply you will need to have the following information available:

  • Applicant’s name and date of birth.
  • NHS or National Insurance (NI) number.

EHIC are issued by the Prescription Pricing Authority and are free of charge. It is important that you carry your EHIC card with you when traveling throughout Europe to receive free emergency medical treatment
